Interesting, well-researched work on the Empress of Austria. Portrayed her, I believe accurately, as a woman of some intellect; her love of Hungary, her obsession with being away from her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph (who deeply loved her) and the neglect of her duties as Empress of Austria, and her propensity for lavish spending. The author also writes about Elizabeth's charm, generosity and kindness when it suited her. She loved horses and rode them beautifully, excelling in equestrian events.. The author also honestly tells about Elisabeth's willfulness, selfishness, obsession with her beauty, her lack of deep concern for her daughter, HSH Archduchess Gisele, and for her son, Crown Prince Rudolph by being continually away for long periods of time during the critical times of their lives. From the book, one can discern that she imposed this loneliness on herself. It certainly portrays her mental instability after the events at Mayerling and the overwhelming guilt and grief she had about Rudolph's death.

It’s ok but not really for an American reader. I have a hard time reading a lot of the sentence because it was broken English. Unless your are a history teacher it will be hard to follow all of german and Austrian monarchs and the French and German words. Not really impressed

Good

The author may know her subject well, but she repeats and repeats herself. How many times do readers have to read that Elizabeth was beautiful, that her husband loved her, that she may have had affairs, etc. Perhaps if the author had not been so redundant I might have enjoyed the book. It certainly would have cut down the number of pages—or is she paid according to the number of words produced?

This biography or the Empress Elizabeth, aka Sisi, is not just well-researched and written; it provides deep insight into the life, times, and struggles of a spirited young woman, ill-prepared for her royal role. Much myth surrounds Elizabeth (not unlike other compelling, yet flawed "royal" women: Eva Peron and Princess Diana, come to mind). Haslip presents an honest, yet empathic portrait of this incredibly beautiful and selfish, yet charming, sad, and self-destructive woman (the first anorexic?), admired by many and beloved by a few (especially her long-suffering husband, the last Habsurg ruler, Franz Joseph). Anyone planning to visit Vienna should read this fascinating book. Then visit the Imperial Apartments in the Hofburg to experience Sisi's world first hand and wonder what she might have become in another time or place.

I was dreading that this book would be like all other's in that it would portray Elizabeth as a poor little spoiled, mis-understood rich girl. It didn't and I found that very refreshing. My only critism of this book is that there is only one occasion when the author translated the french, german, russian, etc. quotes that were used and I found that mildly annoying as I don't speak or read any of those languages.Overall a very good book!

I ordered this as a used book and it was in excellent condition. Very prompt delivery and no problems. Enjoyed reading about her life and family mattersand learned so much about the times in which she lived. Would even consider reading this again as it was so compelling.

I enjoyed the book. It was well written and obviously well researched.I like the way it had info from personal writtings from the time, also.I enjoyed the gallery of pictures included in the text, as well.I will probably read the book at least one more time.
