From Booklist
In 1903 Hollywood was a quiet, newly incorporated village where Sunday Sabbath was strictly observed, and gambling and alcohol were prohibited. The vast surrounding area, filled with canyons, mountain lions, and bears, was hardly habitable. All of that quickly changed in 1910 with the annexation of Hollywood to Los Angeles. By the end of 1913, Centaur Film Company had relocated to the West Coast. Samuel Goldwyn and Cecil B. DeMille settled in, and the making of the first Hollywood movie, Squaw Man, a Western, was underway.

Hollywood's history truly is movieland's history, and vice versa. In Movieland Directory are approximately 30,000 addresses of celebrity residences, film locations, and other historic movie-related sites in and around Hollywood, from its early days to the present, uncovered after years of exhaustive research. Regardless of neighborhood or township, the streets in Greater Los Angeles are interfiled and listed alphabetically. Many property addresses are listed more than once, depending upon the occupants. For example, 718 Hillcrest Road, Beverly Hills, was home to Don Knotts (1960s) and Barbara Stanwyck (1930s). 1041 N. Formosa Avenue, Hollywood, was the location of Hampton Studios (no date), Nero Films Inc. (1950s), and Pickford-Fairbanks Studios (1919).

Each numbered entry lists property occupants and occupations. When applicable, additional information, such as reference source, date, and former street name, is included. The index serves to connect individuals and enterprises to pertinent properties. The lengthy introduction is of utmost importance, giving meaning and interest to the entire directory. Fleming has proven that "there is history on every block, in almost every house" in Hollywood, not just at the focal points on tourist "star" maps. Interesting directory. Ann Cohen

From the Inside Flap
Page One of the Preface For me, the Los Angeles area feels almost alive with movie history. From Chaplin walking Hollywood sidewalks in 1915 to the Three Stooges running down Culver City streets in 1930 to westerns filmed in the Valley in the 1950s, the area has been the background for thousands of films. And home to millions of movie people. Not just the stars, but the people who made the films. From the directors, writers, and set designers to the prop men, stunt people, and studio drivers, every single neighborhood seemingly overflowed with movie people. The research that spawned this collection has been ongoing, amidst work on other books, for over 20 years. What literally began by pulling off Sunset Boulevard to buy a "Map to the Stars’ Homes" in 1981 evolved into this listing. The primary focus is home addresses, but it also includes other locations of historical or architectural interest. The list is organized by street name. Note that many streets run through more than one city. Individual listings include the specific street address and city location, followed by the name of the person that lived there or the name of the location itself. Parenthetical information follows, indicating the person’s occupation and when they lived at that address. Over 10,000 forms from the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Federal Census were reviewed page by page in addition to other research. In an individual listing the notation "census" indicates that the address has been confirmed by the Federal Census. The information has been exhaustively researched using source material of all types. Confirming Hollywood addresses can be a challenging undertaking, partly because there is so much incorrect information out there. The most common sources of bad information are the "Star Maps" themselves, and the real estate people in and around Hollywood. A personal collection of hundreds of "Maps of the Movie Star’s Homes," including some of the first examples going back to the 1920s, provided a start. However, while they are interesting pieces of Hollywood history, the information was suspect as early as the 1930s. Today’s maps, sold from Brentwood to Hollywood on street corners and in stores, are littered with errors and are at best unreliable. Incredibly, the most popular map—still sold around Sunset Blvd. in Beverly Hills—has not been significantly revised or corrected since the early 1970s! Other than the well known Lucille Ball–Jimmy Stewart–Playboy Mansion stuff, there is nothing new. And plenty wrong. Real estate agents around Hollywood may perhaps be forgiven for relying on the fact that a house’s value becomes even more impressive if a buyer knows (or thinks) that Garbo or Hepburn or Gable lived there. So that information becomes part of a house’s history and neighborhood lore, even if untrue. In almost every Los Angeles Times article about historic homes for sale, there is some misinformation about some star once allegedly living in a house. Early Los Angeles telephone books were researched, since they contained many personal phone numbers and addresses as late as the 1940s. Until the 1940s, it was not unusual for well-known actors to answer their own phone and speak with fans. The biggest names had butlers or maids screen their calls, but their numbers were almost always listed. In the preparation of this reference work, thousands of biographies and autobiographies were studied over the years.
